Ingredients

½ cup butter, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 ¾ cups white sugar, divided, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup milk, 2 cups pitted sour cherries, 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Melt butter in a 9x13-inch baking dish while the oven preheats, removing after about 5 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and baking powder, then mix in milk until smooth. Pour the batter over the melted butter without stirring. Clean and dry the bowl, then toss cherries with the remaining 3/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon flour. Spread the cherry mixture over the batter, avoiding any stirring. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
