Ingredients

1 recipe pastry for double-crust pie, 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored, ½ cup butter, ¾ cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, 3 cups water, 2 cups white sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish. Roll out pastry dough and cut it into six squares, placing a cored apple on each one. Fill the center of the apples with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, then wrap the pastry around the fruit and seal the edges. Prepare a sauce by boiling water, sugar, vanilla, and butter together for 5 minutes. Pour this syrup over the dumplings and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. Serve the warm dumplings in bowls topped with the extra sauce.
